chlo|ro|phyll

chlo|ro|phyll
chlo|ro|phyll or chlo|ro|phyl «KLR uh fihl, KLOHR-», noun.
the green coloring matter of plants. In the presence of light it makes carbohydrates, such as starch and sugar, from carbon dioxide and water, a process called photosynthesis. Chlorophyll usually occurs in small bodies (chloroplasts) within the cell, and exists in several known forms, all having a porphyrin nucleus containing magnesium and a phytol side chain. Chlorophyll is essential to most plants and thus indirectly to almost all living organisms. It has been used in medicines and as a coloring for waxes and oils. »

The spectroscopic examination of chlorophyll shows that it absorbs the light of just those wave lengths which are most effective in photosynthesis (Fred W. Emerson).

[< French chlorophylle < Greek chlōrós plale green + phýllon leaf]
